Whole30 Animal Style Burger Salad

June 5, 2019 by Dawn

IN-N-OUT Burger fans, you’ll LOVE this Whole30 Animal Style Burger Salad! All the flavors and a homemade ‘spread’ style dressing – hold the bun & cheese 🙂

I’m totally in for turning a burger or sandwich into a SALAD. Have you tried it?

Paleo Animal Style Burger Salad

WHERE’S THE BEEF?

If you’ve been to Southern CA you’ve probably heard about IN-N-OUT Burger. The first store opened in 1948 in Baldwin Park, a burb of LA. Most of us that grew up on these freshly made, perfectly prepared burgers with the impeccable service and that famous red and white logo right off the freeway.

Their menu is simple and every time you go you will get the exact same as the time before, consistency that has stood the test of time. Classic burgers, hand cut fries and fountain drinks or thick tasty shakes.

WHAT’S AN ANIMAL STYLE BURGER?

The not so secret menu has changed up the classic flavors and going “Animal Style” is a big flavor bomb! They cook the burger in mustard, then top it off with grilled onion and dill pickles. An extra layer of their sandwich spread goes on and once you’ve tried it this way you’re never going back ya’ll.

You can go “Protein Style” too and get it with a lettuce wrap instead of a bun! Grab the extra napkins and dive in.

LET’S TALK SALAD

Whole30 Animal Style Burger Salad is the answer to your hankering for IN-N-OUT at HOME! This is a hearty salad and it’s FILLING with all these veggie goodies. The ground beef is cooked in mustard to give it that twang, sauté the onions up and that’s all you need to cook. Add a nice power green mix as the base, top with tomato, pickle, cheese if you like and a little dill pickle…..we’re almost there.

THE SPREAD

Their burger ‘spread’ is pretty much a take on thousand island, it’s not super sweet though. Here, I use my Dad’s favorite homemade go-to. Literally every night he’d make a dinner salad with his dressing I call Coyote Sauce (his nick name).

Coyote Sauce is simple, you’ve probably got it all in your fridge door already! A combo of homemade mayo, mustard, catchup (sugar free) and apple cider vinegar with a hefty hand on the pepper shaker.

LAYER OR CHOPPED

When you’re ready to serve get a couple BIG bowls and tear up your lettuce mix. Think bite size for all the fixins so you get the Animal Style bite every time! You can layer the ingredients like the photo to give it a fancy presentation and drizzle the sauce over the top. Or, mix it all up ahead of time and serve it up! Use every last drop of the Coyote Sauce with it- don’t miss out on the avocado oil good fats in that mayo!

Ingredients

Salad

  • 2 T Avocado Oil
  • 1 med White Onion
  • 1 Ib Ground Beef 90/10
  • 2 T Brown Mustard
  • 1 10oz Cherry Tomatoes
  • 1/2 c Dill Pickles
  • 1 5oz box Mixed Spring Greens Or a head of red leaf lettuce

Dressing

  • 1/2 c Primal Kitchen Or Whole30 Mayo
  • 1 T Primal Kitchen Ketchup
  • 1 T Mustard
  • 1 t Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 t Black Pepper

Instructions

  1. Dice the onion and saute on med-high with the avocado oil until glossy, add meat and a little salt and pepper, cook through. Add the mustard at the end stir and set the meat off to the side to cool down a little before topping it on your salad.

  2. Prep the veggies; half the cherry tomatoes, dice the pickles, tear or chop up the greens mix.

  3. On two plates divide the greens up as the base, divvy up all the ingredients on each plate.

  4. Dressing; combine all ingredients together, add salt and pepper to taste. Divide up evenly to each salad - enjoy!

Recipe Notes

I like to mix it all together "chopped" style so you get an "animal style" bite every time!
